The Toynbee Tiles T-Shirt features, and is inspired by, the famous Toynbee Tiles, a series of messages of unknown origin found embedded in asphalt of streets in about two dozen major cities in the United States and four South American cities.
Dating back to as early as the 1980's, several hundred such tiles have been found each with a variation of the same phrase. The exact meaning of the phrase, or the purpose of the tiles themselves, is the subject of much debate.
