The Human League are an English synthpop band formed in Sheffield in 1977. They are one of the most successful synthpop bands of all time, with their singles "Don't You Want Me" and "Human" reaching number one in the UK charts.
The band's original lineup consisted of Martyn Ware, Ian Craig Marsh, and Phil Oakey. They released their debut album, Reproduction, in 1979. The album was a commercial failure, but it did spawn the single "Being Boiled," which became a cult classic.
The only constant band member since 1977 has been lead singer and songwriter Philip Oakey. Keyboard players Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh both left the band in 1980 to form Heaven 17. Under Oakey's leadership, the Human League then evolved into a commercially successful new pop band, with a new line-up including female vocalists Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley. Since the mid-1990s, the band have essentially been a trio of Oakey, Catherall and Sulley with various sidemen.
In 1981, the band released their third album, Dare. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it spawned the singles "Don't You Want Me" and "The Sound of the Crowd." "Don't You Want Me" became a worldwide hit, reaching number one in the charts of over 30 countries.
The Human League continued to release successful albums throughout the 1980s, including Hysteria (1982), Crash (1986), and Romantic? (1989). They disbanded in 1990, but they reunited in 1995 and have been active ever since.
The Human League are considered one of the most important and influential synthpop bands of all time. Their music has been sampled by many artists, including Madonna, Pet Shop Boys, and The Chemical Brothers.
