David Foster Wallace was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and academic who is considered one of the most important and influential writers of his generation. His work is known for its complex and challenging explorations of modern life, often with a focus on themes of addiction, depression, and the nature of reality.
Wallace was born in 1962 in Ithaca, New York. He attended Amherst College, where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and then went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. His first book, The Broom of the System, was published in 1987.
Wallace's most famous work is the 1996 novel Infinite Jest, which is a sprawling, encyclopedic work that explores a wide range of topics, including addiction, entertainment, and the nature of consciousness. The novel was a critical and commercial success, and it has been praised by critics for its ambition and intelligence.
Wallace's other notable works include the short story collections Girl with Curious Hair (1989) and Brief Interviews with Hideous Men (1999), the essay collection A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again (1997), and the non-fiction book Consider the Lobster (2005).
