LA CONFIDENTIAL T-SHIRT

Badge, Betrayal and the Beautiful Lies of Los Angeles

Los Angeles, 1953. Movie stars smile for photographers, gossip magazines sell scandal by the truckload and the police department presents itself as the guardian of a glittering new American dream. Beneath the spotless publicity photographs, the city's most powerful institutions are conducting business that could never withstand the light.

L.A. Confidential, directed by Curtis Hanson and released in 1997, adapts James Ellroy's sprawling crime novel into a sharp, richly textured neo-noir. Its three central detectives appear to share little beyond a badge. Ed Exley, Bud White and Jack Vincennes each possess a different understanding of justice and a different weakness that the city can exploit.

Guy Pearce plays Exley, the ambitious officer who believes in rules and career advancement. Russell Crowe's Bud White follows a brutally personal moral code, especially when violence against women is involved. Kevin Spacey's Vincennes has traded much of his police work for show-business connections, assisting the scandal press and enjoying the privileges of celebrity.

The three men become entangled in an investigation whose apparent solution conceals a far more elaborate network of corruption. A violent killing, hidden prostitution operations and carefully managed newspaper stories expose the gulf between the official version of events and the transactions happening behind closed doors.

Kim Basinger plays Lynn Bracken, whose resemblance to Hollywood actress Veronica Lake forms part of a calculated fantasy sold to powerful clients. Her relationship with Bud White supplies the film with a wounded emotional centre, complicating the hardboiled conventions through moments of vulnerability.

Danny DeVito's Sid Hudgens embodies the sensationalist press, cheerfully converting secrets into entertainment. The tabloid's appetite for humiliation is not merely background colour: it is another mechanism by which the city protects some people and destroys others.

Hanson and screenwriter Brian Helgeland preserve Ellroy's vision of glamour built on corruption while giving the story an elegant cinematic rhythm. Period cars, luminous photography and meticulously recreated streets make Los Angeles seductive even as the plot strips away its moral pretensions.

The L.A. Confidential T-Shirt celebrates a modern noir masterpiece, its dangerous City of Angels and the detectives forced to discover how expensive the truth can become.

The city sells dreams. The bill arrives later.
