Wayne began his acting career in the 1920s, appearing in small roles in silent films. He gained prominence in the 1930s, starring in a series of B-movies for Warner Bros. In 1939, he starred in "Stagecoach," a landmark Western film directed by John Ford, which catapulted him to stardom.

Over the course of his career, Wayne appeared in over 170 films and became known for his rugged, macho persona and his portrayal of cowboys and soldiers. Some of his most famous films include "True Grit," "The Searchers," "Rio Bravo," and "The Alamo."

Wayne was also a political conservative and supported the anti-communist movement in Hollywood during the 1950s. He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1979 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously in 1980.
