These were stories shaped by blackout streets, railway arches, bomb-damaged neighbourhoods, smoky public houses and respectable drawing rooms hiding dangerous secrets. Their characters were professional criminals, compromised detectives, fugitives, blackmailers and ordinary people drawn into situations from which there could be no clean escape.
